Stop this Abuse!

Off late, have been reading of a lot of cases of rape/molestation all over India (our capital seems to be leading). Just read about one more where an 11 year old was a victim and is now pregnant! The moment I read about such things, my blood begins to boil. What sort of a person would do such a deed and that too to a small girl?! The dude in question has been arrested and if tried would get a few years of RI and might get out again. That is enough punishment for such a crime? Definitely not!!

Sometime back, we had a cop in Bombay, commit such an act in a police station in one of the busiest areas in south bombay - marine lines. That is the place I used to pass by everyday on my way home from college. When I had read about the incidence, I was too shocked to react. I could not fathom how the constable managed to commit such an act in that place?! I mean, there are so many people passing by there even at midnight, surely someone must have heard the noise?! The good part was he was arrested and convicted. The bad part, he got only 7years RI (that is the max our law prescribes!). even worse, it seems he had already served a year while on trial, so he would not have to serve that one year, plus some days are anyways dedcuted bcoz of some govt bonanza, and if he shows good behaviour, some more time deducted...eventually, he would be out in about 5 years time!

That is all the punishment for ruining the entire life of another person? Cant even imagine the mental trauma that girl must have gone through! And she might have to face this same person again 5 years later when he is released! What would happen to her, if that ever happens?
Our human rights activists protest capital punishment and in such cases, even if it were handed out, I dont think it is enough. I think, the punishment has to be much more severe, much more gruesome and shocking that it should act as very strong deterrent. We could take inspiration from the arab countries here maybe, and flog/stone such people in public, humiliate them or something even stronger so that the next guy who thinks of committing such an act, would think a thousand times before doing it and then not do it!!

Unfortunately, I know something like this will never happen. Our law is too weak and the whole process is so freaking slow that the victims, who show the courage to come forward and report, hardly ever get justice. Unless she happens to be someone of foreign origin! In such cases, justice is meted out speedily! Can't understand our obeisance to the white skin! I am not saying that they should not have got justice, am glad in their case it was delivered speedily. But why not do the same for women of our country?! Why the double standards, the lack of concern for our own people? I guess this is part of another issue, where we Indians discriminate against our fellow contrymen based on skin color, caste et al!

Till we inept indians do something about this, the women will have to take the matters in their own hands, and hit back at men guilty of such crimes!
