Yep, can't help but write about this, though am late by about 4 days :-D
Was reading some article in the TOI where the dude mentions that India has become like a 21 inch TV for most of us. The reasoning being that if you turn on the TV at any given instance, depending on what is being discussed, the same set of people are asked their opinions! And as per some poll conducted a few days before the I-day, the top most issues concerning people seem to be corruption, population and whether India will become a super power or not!!
Frankly, I have not been watching tv of late (and it feels good, believe it or not!),
so will go by what the dude wrote. But I kinda agreed with his point that the issues of concern for most people seem to be the ones mentioned above (not sure if people really care if we become a super power or not!) and if something goes wrong, blame the damn politicans :-D
Sadly, after 59 years of independence, for every step we take forward, we seem to be taking 10 steps backwards! One of those I already mentioned in my previous blog - people opposing English!! Corruption as always is on the rise (k'taka and esp blore seem to be very high on the list here). Terror is fast becoming a way of life all over the country. Projects/privatisation are being opposed by idiots who don't seem to be knowing what is good for the country. Religion and votebank politics is ruling the roost. And inspite of being led by 2 of the most qualified people in the country, they are powerless and helpless (cases in point being: passing of the OoP bill even though the prez sent it back and who can forget the quota issue!!).
Of course there are a lot of other things I can ramble about but some of those are for another day! Personally, for me also I-day has become just another holiday and it was a very welcome one at that!! In my locality back home, there was the usual function where the flag was hoisted followed by some games and snacks n tea. Talked to another friend here and seems the same things were done in his locality as well!
Not the ideal way to celebrate (is there a reason to do so?) but that is how it has become!
The optimists may point out that not everything is bleak and gloomy as far as the future of the country goes, but there seem to be more negatives than positives and I sincerely hope that the optimists are right :-)
Anyways, the holiday is gone and the weekend is also half over! Hoping for the best for the country!
As they say "Sau mein se ninyanvein (99) beimaan, phir bhi Mera Bharat Mahaan!!!"
Jai Hind!

this is interesting! everyone living in India seems to be cribbing about how bad the state is..and we living in the US keep reading everyday how India is making rocking progress in every field...for me India is transitioning, and there will always be good and bad...overall for me india is taking 10 steps forward and 2 steps backward...and not the other way around

dude,
tat was another pt made in the article, how the media seems to be painting a rosy picture overall and the image being conveyed is that India is the place to be!
in fact, in a place like blore, the gap between haves and have nots seems to be increasing day by day and instances of mugging/looting (lots of them in broad daylight!)/killing are on the rise!
for a 60 yr old nation, we r doing well.. long way to go but nonetheless we've defi done some good work ! majorly, apna population needs to be curbed man! fav pastime of indians seems to b making babies :@
haves and have nots are always going to be there...in any country...doesnt mean the country is not progressing..the law and order situation is bad i agree...and that needs to be looked at...and all these things take time...as neta said...for a 60 yrs old country we are fine...considering we wasted a good 25 years in between...
yeah, i agree that for a 60 yr old country we are not doing tat bad...but the rate at which things seem to be going bad, we mite probably not go as far as expected.
when we have MPs who become one only when they want to pass bills like Oop or increase in their own salaries/perks and all voices of protest ignored, the future will not be too bright unless some remedial action is taken at the earliest.
and the reason for mentioning haves/have nots was to point out the benefits of progress are not reaching the majority of the population.
uv.. agreed... we have a long way to go and political system needs an overhaul.. but just to give a reference.. Us got independence in 1780's and till 1960 they had racism and black-white ka nakhra.. it takes a lot of time for a nation to come out of its past.. ya we made mistakes politically in the past after 1947, and mistakes are happening even now.. but how many 60 yrs old nations can boast of the progress we've made apart from a japan who are leaps and bounds ahead ! i know the developments taking place do not reach a major chunk of the population which still survices on water tankers for their daily supply of water, its a matter of time.. and please.. we have to stop mating like bunnies ! the more ppl u cram in the counrty, the more difficult it is for all of them to get the basic necessities... apna govt fukat ka condom de raha hai fir bhi apna log "saal mein ek bachcha" policy pe atal hai ! but overall, we are crawling ahead for sure...we need to do better but we r ok !
sorry for the discourse though !
hi maven,
read your blog...well written. but i believe that politicians in india are making a mess more than anything and that sadly though we are a democracy, things are running entirely at the whim of a few ppl on top making it seem that we no longer choose thm to power but that they elect themselves.
@neta:
dude, i agree tat our population and rate at which itz growing is one of the major issues facing our country..in fact most of our problems like poverty, illiteracy etc can be blamed on it (and vice versa!!). Also agree tat for a 60 yr old country we are not doing all tat bad. But, I think as suren pointed out, the picture u guys are getting sitting out there, and wat i am seeing being here it quite different...
and feel free to write as long and as many discourses as u feel like :-D
@mitali:
i agree tat politicans are primarily responsible for the state of affairs, but i think that educated ppl like us also shud take some blame for our inaction which emboldens these politicans and criminals to do as they please!
A nice article on the topic on individual freedom, not exactly relevant to your post, but still a nice read.

hi maven,
i believe despite the eductaed class of ppl, the politicians are having a free hand. i mean the MP's hiking their own salaries was funny to read in the papers.
thats just an example.. and one man/ woman can do nothing! all sounds good when u read that in text books. its time we accepted the reality that this is the way our system works and that we have to work through it while bing in it... no use being an optimist in a fool's paradise !
by the way, read up a few of ur other blogs as well. so ur a techie in Bangalore?
@pritesh:
yes sarkar, nice article and kinda similar to what I was mentioning!
@mitali:
one man/woman cannot do much, but someone will have to start somewhere, right? how long will people be able to sit back and put up with all this nonsense?
i guess we can go on and on and never reach an agreement :-)
